The Vinyl Revival: Why John Lewis and WHSmith Are Selling Records Again

The Vinyl Revival: Why John Lewis and WHSmith Are Selling Records Again

The UK music industry has recently witnessed an unexpected but favorable trend – a 20-year high in  physical album sales. In digital streaming societies, traditional formats such as vinyl, CDs, and even  cassettes are making a comeback. Major retailers such as John Lewis and WHSmith have responded by  restoring the sale of vinyl records after being off the shelves for decades.

Physical Album Sales Hit a 20-Year High

In 2024, the UK saw a 1.4% growth in  the sales of physical albums and this resulted in 17.4 million units being sold, the first increase in  sales since 1994 (Official Charts Company, 2024). This growth was mainly due to  a 9.1% rise in sales of vinyl which had been reignited and reached a  30-year high of 6.7 million units. Remarkably, only three out of the top  10 best-selling vinyl albums were old records, which means that new artists are equally as relevant to  this trend as old-school artists (Official Charts Company, 2024).

John Lewis could not afford to ignore this change any longer and therefore teamed up with the indie music retailer Rough Trade to offer customers a wide  range of vinyl with albums by Nirvana, John Coltrane and Taylor Swift. This is because  there was a 17% increase in the sale of turntables and record players at John Lewis over  the past five years (The Guardian, 2025). For instance, WHSmith made news when  it announced that it had restocked vinyl records in 80 of its stores – its first foray  into the format in over 30 years (The Guardian, 2024).

What’s Driving the  Vinyl Revival?

The increasing demand for physical music can be attributed to several factors:

Nostalgia and Collectability – Some people love the feel of the vinyl, the large artwork and the whole  experience of listening to the music. Many people regard vinyl as an item to keep and treasure rather than  just something to use to play music (The Times, 2024).
Superior Sound Quality –  Vinyl lovers argue that vinyl produces a warmer and more richly detailed sound than digital files compressed for  downloading. The return to the appreciation of high-fidelity sound has also contributed to the rise in interest in  turntables and Hi-Fi equipment (Financial Times, 2024).

Turntables are Back: A  Market Analysis

The market for turntables and high-quality audio equipment has also been on the rise,  with John Lewis and Richer Sounds, among other retailers, recording an upsurge in the sales  of premium audio products (The Guardian, 2025).

A2D2 Stream: How to  Combine Vinyl and Streaming?

However, as the vinyl comes back to the market, many music lovers want  to best of analogue and digital worlds. This is where A2D2 Stream  comes in. This cutting edge technology enables users to stream their vinyl records wirelessly to their smart  speakers, PCs, and mobile devices and thus be able to play their favourite albums in different rooms of the  house without having to bother about the location of their turntable setup

Consumer  Reactions to Vinyl's Return

Customers have shown interest in the return of vinyl to mass market stores.  A 35-year-old buyer, Paul said, “"It's always there, always accessible when you need it. That's why I like having physical copies”  (BBC). Likewise, Leslie Sopp, aged 68, a vinyl enthusiast for many years  said, “My son took over the vinyl mantle, he works in the music industry, so he cherry-picked my records with my permission ” (BBC). These views show that vinyl is  not just for the older generation of collectors or for millennials finding their way around the format for the first  time.

 The Future of Physical Music

The trends suggest that the format is here to stay. Moreover, as  sales of turntables keep growing and technological innovations such as A2D2 Stream enable integration of vinyl  with the modern lifestyle, the trend is expected to continue through 2025 and beyond.
